Dr Irene Sophia PlankMarie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellow
I'm interested in how people understand and interact with each other. While my previous research has focused on real-life interactions or tightly controlled experiments, I'm now starting to combine the two by using virtual reality. Specifically, I want to investigate how we can design VR spaces to encourage prosocial behaviour and lead this work through the VIBE project.

Hakeem BeedarPhD StudentI’m a PhD Candidate investigating the differences in the use of figurative language between neurotypical individuals and autistic individuals. I want to address the stereotype that autistic individuals “don’t understand sarcasm and metaphor,” as I believe that all acts of communication are inherently metaphorical, even these letters you’re reading right now. I have a background in linguistics, and hope to continue exploring communication as an emergent phenomenon of human behaviour, helping to deepen the intersection between linguistics and psychology.

External PhD + Masters Students
Luca M. LeistenSocial Brain Sciences PhD StudentI am a PhD student at ETH Zürich and EPF Lausanne at the cognitive and neurosciences department under the supervision of Prof. Emily S. Cross and A/Prof Nathan Caruana - with a research focus on child-agent interaction and learning sciences. My research interest lies in social interaction, long-term engagement, and bias in human-robot and child-agent interaction. I am also collaborating with Nate on a project called Outback Robots.

Gabriel BeckerMaster of Human Factors StudentI am a Masters student based at TU Berlin, working with Prof Eva Weise and A/Prof Nathan Caruana on a project called InvigiBOT examining the role of social robot presence and interaction on human cognitive performance (attention and vigilance) during tedious tasks. My masters project is being conducted in the HAVIC Lab at Flinders (Adelaide) over the 2025-6 summer.

Psychology Honours Students
Neha Santosh NairHonours StudentI am a Psychology Honours student in the HAVIC Lab with a strong interest in understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying human behaviour and cognition. I’m motivated to explore approaches that can promote more inclusive and supportive environments for neurodivergent individuals.
|
Christopher EvergreenHonours StudentI am a Psychology Honours student working on the VIBE project, investigating social interaction and behaviour in immersive virtual environments with Dr Irene Plank and A/Prof Nathan Caruana. I am particularly interested in understanding how first-person experience relates to observable behaviour, and how computational approaches can help us model social cognition across digital and biological contexts.
|
Julian ScalziHonours StudentI’m a Psychology Honours Student working on the VIBE project with Dr Irene Plank and A/Prof Nathan Caruana. My goal is to investigate how virtual social experiences can improve mood and wellbeing.
